client project weblay

this is my initial weblay design for my live client project, this brief specified that the site must be fun and funky, but whilst keeping it easy to use and navigate.

The top banners is where i have been creative and introduced images from iconic posters mixed with stylish graphics. This also gives th viewer an instant idea about what the website is for.

I have kept the main content where all the canvases, contact and order info will be very clean and simple, enabling the viewer to easily understand the content. The mix of funky design at the top and structured at the bottom gives the site a good balance and leaded the viewers eye from the top of the site slowly down.

I am going to produce a couple more for my client to give him the option of choosing. These should be ready to be emailed to him by the weekend. So far everything is running on schedule!

prp first artefact

The field i chose to base my personal research project on was flash. The question i am answering throughout my action research is "how can a versatile too such as Flash aid companies in the online environment.

For my first artefact i produced a flash ad banner with some simple user interaction. I then asked people to interact with the banner while i recorded how long they spent on the banner, if they stayed on the banner until they had completed the simple task and if they clicked through to a web page or not. then i gave them a short questionnaire to fill in to get some feedback as to what people though of the interactive element on the banner.

37 people were shown the banner, with the vast majority of people being between the ages of 16-22. I found that the average time period people stayed engaged with the banner was just over one minute. I found this to be a considerable length of time to stay on an advert, and consequently the viewer is likely to take in more information. Although, when asked if the interaction made them more inclined to click through on the banner to a website, 29 out of 37 said no, but 25 out of 37 said they enjoyed interacting with the banner. Showing that most people will enjoy interaction with a banner but are not willing and not interested in giving up any more of their time to find out more information.

diesel website

This is diesel.com, possibly one of my favorite websites. its built solely using flash. This website incorporates stunning visual photographs and images with incredibly slick interaction and animation. I suppose usability could be seen as an issue with this website though, there is no clear structure to the site, many pages are completely different, so finding links and navigation can take a while. But without all these quirky features this site would not have the same impact!

i want to take that random aspect that works so well on the diesel site and use it with my portfolio! usually i would make a site that was accessibly and easy to nav but i though as most of the people viewing my portfolio will be in the web and design field this would not cause so much of a usability problem

simulated client

for my simulated client project i produced a micro site promoting and selling insect repellent. I found that most peoples designs included gimmicky cartoon bugs and spray cans, but as i was trying to sell a product i though i would approach the project from the other angle and introduce images of bodies. this using these types of images instead gave a much sexier edge to the whole site image, not dissimilar to that of a deodorant.

these are a few images that were used on the website, i have combined clean images of peoples bodies with funky, bold, green graphics to give the over all image a nature/insect theme.

i also incorporated an interactive flash map to show users which insects are found in which continents. over all i think this micro site was a successful project.

below is the finished site and a shot of the interactive flash map.

spp3 portfolio

i am now in the process of building my own online portfolio on which all my work can be uploaded too. to gain inspiration i looked at other peoples and companies portfolios. i found netdiver.net very useful in deciding what route to go down.

I wanted something clean and professional looking, but on the other hand i didnt want it to look dull and uninspiring. i found if a design is made too busy though it kind of over shadows the work its actually showcasing,

below is one of my designs which i think work very well.

as this is my online portfolio i thought i could afford to be a bit more creative and break a few of the standard rules of web design. for example, right aligning most of the text and placing the links in a list in the top left of the page.

It is quite a clean page, and the dark colors i think make it look very professional, but this is broken up by the nice patterned banner running across the top of the page. im hoping to have this site up and running by the end of easter!
